Oh Teh Nos, Collisions!
While I was at SIGGRAPH 07 I picked up a book called Game Physics Engine Development. Since getting it I have been reading the book nearly non-stop and implementing the physics processing into my own code. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get into real time physics simulations. Personally I'm about 4/5ths through the book and very happy with the results that I'm already able to see in my code.
At the moment my code is not really steering very far from what is talked about in the book. Though, once I complete the book I can already see that I will need to make a few adjustments for my current game project. I have already spotted a few good threads on GameDev.net which talk about different ways to solve common problems in physics systems.
Below are a few screen shots I took last night of the physics code at work. Just for reference I have each of the axes represented by a different color, the x axis is red, the y axis is green and the z axis is green. Also keep in mind that the spheres are being held in by invisible planes, one plane on the bottom at 0.0, 0.0, 0.0 pointing up, and one to each of the four sides around it.
Here you can see a few spheres stacking on top of each other. Since all of the spheres have a 0.0 Z position they all stay in a neat wall. With this amount of spheres the engine was stable, although there was still a bit of jittering and rotating due to there not being any calculated friction.
Here I have almost tripled the number of spheres inside of the scene. The spheres may look nice and neat in the image but in reality they were rotating every which way and jumping around due to odd collisions. As you can see there are a few spheres which interpenetrates.
In this scene I decided to put a Z position in for the spheres, so instead of the neat wall they piled up on the ground. The spheres acted a little less erratic then in the second image but it was still far from stable. In the end I scrapped this scene since it really didn't give me a good visual for what was happening.
What is even cooler to look when running these simulations are the similarities to real life that start to pop up which are not coded in. For example, if you notice all of the smaller spheres will end up trickling down to the bottom and the larger ones will stay on top.
Well I am off for now, I hope that I'll be able to show off more very soon. I've already been playing around with boxes and triangle meshes which will really extend the possibilities of what I'm able to simulate. The scenes like above will also start to become more more stable once I add the friction calculations in.
