I will get to the main topic in a second, first I would like to give a little explanation as to where I have been for these past two months. The last post I made was right before GDC while I was still working in Chicago. At the time I knew things were not working out between the company and I, so I was on a mission to find another job. I met a lot of great people at GDC and was able to learn much more about the industry first hand. It wasn't until a little while after GDC did I finally got in contact with the company Meteor Games in West Hollywood CA. So off I went from Ohio to California and since have been spending my time settling into the new area as well as the new job. With so much going on this has little time for development.
I have always been a fan of Shmups, aka "shoot um ups" ever since I was able to get my hand on the playstation one copy of r-type 1 and 2. Over the years the games had gotten better and more involved, though as 3D became the wave of the future this genre took a step back from the main stream. Admittedly, I did not keep up with them as vehemently as some, so I feel out of the loop. Then in 2006 It had come to my attention that there was a large niche following of shmups and more particular side scrolling shooters, mainly pursued by independent developers, and generally from individuals in Korea or Japan.
After coming to California I had done a little research into these independent games, and since have been inspired to create something that can be put into the same genre. So the game "Alpha State" has been born, or is at least in the process of it. Below are a few screen shots of what I'm currently testing and developing.

Not only is this hard for the player, it's also a great stress test for the collision detection and the rendering. With a bit of good design things like this run around 60fps on my old machine.
So far the development has been an interesting adventure. Most of my time has been spent on developing the skeletal structure of the application, though thankfully that is nearing it's completion. The gameplay is intended to have both manic and methodical parts, I've had a hard time choosing on what will suit it best. If all goes as planned there will be two modes of play, a simple survival mode in which you must stay alive for the longest time possible and second there will be a tournament mode in which you will be presented with specific challenges to over come. I don't want to give too much away about the game at the moment, since with all good projects the details will come with time. I hope that in the upcoming weeks I'll be able to show you much more as I get time to continue my development.
