IK Solver And My Next Title
As stated in my previous post, my physics engine has reached a stable and acceptable state. As a result I have already begun on my next title which is intended to both showcase as well as stress test my physics code. I intended to leave the details of the title a mystery for now, but I will reveal a bit of an overview.
The play style of the game can be generalized as a side scrolling puzzle game. You as the player must use your mind and the playing field to accomplish a series of seemingly simple tasks. Like most puzzle games the theme is to be addictive and easy to pick up. Breaking away from the normal puzzle genre is that the title will include a plot line which I have firmly latched myself onto. It's very exciting stuff.
While implementing the alpha version I have had to define what assents are needed and build the pipeline for them. In particular, this has lead me to writing a simple IK solver for both animation playback and some dynamic environmental reactions for the characters in game. Thankfully, for my uses a simple IK solver was not difficult to implement.
My IK solver implementation uses an iterative approach where it will traverse the IK chain and try to move closer to the target. You can run the algorithm several times and each you will reach a more correct result. As you reach the target the movement becomes slower and slower each iteration, so a very accurate result can be expensive, but a good approximation is simple. I derived my implementation from the website link below. My code deviates a little from what they have described, yet I have found it works well.

Here are the details of how my IK solver works. The algorithm will visit each of the bones and perform the following. It will first find an axis of rotation which will take the tip of the chain to the target, it does this by making a normalized cross product of a vector pointing from the joint to the tip and a vector pointing from the joint to the target. Using this rotation axis I can then find the angle needed to bring the point as close as possible to the target. I then apply this rotation and move on to the next joint in the chain.
I would eventually like to go into more depth with the IK solver, allowing for robust results, quicker solve times, and even angle constraints. Though for what I'm doing I'm very happy with the results I was able to pull off. I'm very excited about the work that I'm doing and I hope to share more in the future.
